Small Steps



I seem to be going ok with taking the various supplements.

What i am taking is:

1). Custom Probiotics L.Acidopholus powder (1 scoop before b'fast and 1 scoop before dinner)
2). Freeda Multi-Vitamin (1/2 a tablet with b'fast)
3). Metagenics Metagest (1/2 tab with b'fast, 1 tab with lunch and 1 tab with dinner)

I have just order some more probiotics from Custom Probiotics, a 100g L.Acidophulis powder and bottle of Adult CP-1 Formula. I haven't tried these tablets as yet, but will give them a go, they contain 6 different strains, so hopefully will be better if i can tolerate them.

My bowel is working better and I feel that the multivitamin has helped alot, although i have to be careful to not take to much or it makes my head race and i cant sleep. In general i am sleeping alot better, which has helped alot.

Step by Step


I introduced a multivitamin on saturday, i'm taking about 1/4 of a tablet with breakfast and another 1/4 with lunch. The reccomended dose is 1 tablet 3 times a day with food, but with my past experience with multivitamins this would be far to much, so i'm easing myself in. Usually multivitamines affect my sleeping patterns, as in I dont sleep :)

The Multivitamin is Freeda SCD Multi-Vitamin, it is pretty much every thing free!

I also purchased a SCD B-Complex with C & Zinc, although i wont be trying this for a while, i only bought it so save on shipping costs in the long run.

Gradually trying new things

Well so good so far with trying this new treatment. I have been taking Orthplex Hydrozyme digestive enzymes for about 2 weeks and they are going ok and about a week ago i started taking the Lactobacillus acidophilus from Custom Probiotics, initially once a day, but now twice. Surprisingly i seem to be tolerating both these ok so far, the Hydrozyme has some added glucose in it which i'm not happy with, so i may eventually try a different brand. My next medication to bring into the regeigm will be L-Glutamine, which will hopefully start the healing of the Leaky Gut Syndrome.

So fingers crossed.

Candida

I had an appointment with my doctor to get the results of my gastroscopy and blood tests. The gastroscopy was pretty much normal except for a slight ulceration around where my esophagus meets my stomach, but nothing to worry about. The blood tests showed that was a bit anemic and b12 was low.

I also had a Candida test which was positive, I was pretty sure this was case as from my recent research my symptoms indicated it. I assume this leads back to when I took a long course of antibiotics in my teens for acne. It also runs hand in hand with the malabsorbtion and leaky gut.

So treatment is;

1). Digestive enzymes to digest proteins better
2). L-Glutamine to heal the gut
3). Probiotics to make everything nice and happy
4). No sugar the Candida has less to eat, this includes no fruit and reduced sweet foods.
5). Clean out my colon, by taking a magnesium oxide cleanse for 5 days and then having 6 appointments for colon hydrotherapy. This should clean the Candida out.

I plan on going at a slight slower pace that the doctor advised, due to the sensitivity of my system. At this stage I have been taking the digestive enzymes for 2 days and that seems to be ok, I'll continue for another few days before I introduce the probiotics.

Feeling Better of Late

I've been feeling better of late, this mainly due to reducing my sugar intake bigtime. I have much more energy,although my sleep hasnt been that great. I've been having Pure Harvest Oat Milk (1g sugar per 250ml) quite a bit instead of my usual Rice Dream Original (11g sugar per 240ml). This tends to reinforce the candida theory.

I also had a gastroscopy last week, initial results didnt really show anything, still waiting on the results from the biopsy.

After discussions with the doctor i dont have to endure the colonoscopy at this stage, so just one more lot of bloods tests and then i make another appointment to see him.

An interesting comment

Stumbled across the following on Amazon whilst look at the reviews of Breaking the Vicious Cycle. I have Pimintel's book, but havent had time to read it as yet.

"I'm a 35 year-old male with very good health, at least up until about 2 years ago when I started experiencing IBS symptoms (particularly gas/bloating in the lower abdomen soon after eating, as well as irregular bowel movements, stools and general fatigue). Like many, I was tested by the docs with no conclusive diagnosis other than "IBS," and no useful guidance for improving my situation.

I'm embarked on research to "heal thyself" and came upon this book, along with several others I'll mention. The protocol I've adopted based on these and other sources has put me back to perfect health in less than a few weeks. I suspect the key is Pimentel's SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) theory.

My main resources have been Pimentel's book here, Gottschalls' Specific Cardbohydrate Diet (SCD) and Cordain (and others') work on the "paleodiet," which is very similar to SCD. The upshot is that my symptoms (esp. the gas/bloating) were the result of excessive bacteria in the digestive tract; the gas/bloating being the byproduct of these bacteria working on certain foods I'd eat-most particularly complex sugars and starches.

The approach I developed consists of 3 main parts:

1. Step one: Starve the bacteria. This is the contribution of SCD/paleodiet. By denying the bacteria the specific carbs they thrive upon, they have nothing to feed upon. I noticed a dramatic decrease in my symptoms within 12 hours of adopting the SCD diet. I will say that some of Gottschall's "prohibited" foods make no sense to me (e.g. chickpeas), and I didn't have to be nearly as strict as SCD suggests to see a great improvement. Obviously your mileage may vary, but I was feeling back to 75-80% heath the first night after adopting the SCD diet.

2. Step two: Kill the bacteria off. This is where Pimentel's specific protocol comes in. He recommends specific antibiotics to do this (as I recall non-systemic ones that do a better job of staying within the intestinal tract). I simply used a 10-day course of METRONIDAZOLE (FLAGYL) (500mg 3x daily), and then a 10-day course of ERITHROMYCIN (500mg 2x daily).

3. Step three: Re-build beneficial intestinal bacteria. Concurrent with the antibiotics, I took probiotic supplements (timed so as to not be taken within 2 hours of the antibiotics). I also bought a cheap Salton yogurt maker and started making my own yogurt (which I `supercharged' by adding the powder from a few probiotic capsules before beginning the fermentation process).

Whether these ideas are bunk I cannot say. All I CAN say is that it has been a little over three weeks since I started this "plan," and I've never felt better. My energy has returned. My workouts are once again productive and strong. My bowel movements are like clockwork and as "normal" as they've ever been. I will say, however, that overall I believe that Pimentel's SIBO theory is closer to the truth (at least in my case) than SCD. I say this because there have been several times that I have gone "off the wagon" with SCD-prohibited foods, and I've suffered no ill effects whatsoever.

In any case, I share this not to start a debate. Others with more severe IBS may find none of this works for them. In my case, however, the results were amazing. And since the strategy/investment is minimal, I would recommend anyone at least trying this approach and judge the results for yourself."

I'm scheduled to have a Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy so it was an interesting read. Although i have had both before, my doctor thought it was time to do it all over again, oh the joy!

Yogurt Maker

I picked up a yogurt maker on ebay, descided it would be easier than messing around with any of the "home brew" methods. It will probably run to hot, but i have a plan to lower the temp :) According to the SCD diet the yogurt has to be made at between 100F and 110F. Details here.
